Biography

Tobie Goedewaagen was born in Amsterdam in 1895. He was a philosopher, poet and professor. He became a member of the NSB around 1936, but did not make this public until 1940.

During the German occupation, Goedewagen was Secretary-General at the Department of Public Information and Arts. In that position, he censored culture and forced artists and journalists to become members of the National Socialist Chamber of Culture.

During the war, Goedewagen became a supporter of the Greater German ideology and moved towards the Dutch SS. Due to a conflict with the NSB, he was expelled from the movement by Mussert and continued his career as a professor at the State University of Utrecht. Since 8 July 1941, he was affiliated with the State University of Leiden.

Goedewagen fled to Germany on Mad Tuesday, where he was arrested by the British army on 29 May 1946 and extradited to the Netherlands.

After the war, Goedewagen was prosecuted by a special public prosecutor and his case was brought before a court. In 1948, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison (demand: 15) and a lifelong ban from the civil service. Four years later, he was granted amnesty. Goedewagen became a private lecturer at the Vermaze Institute and he wrote several post-war publications (although published under a pseudonym).
