Biography

Maximilianus Victor Eugène Hubertus Josef Maria (Max) Count de Marchant et d'Ansembourg was born in Gulpen in 1892. He was a wealthy Roman Catholic nobleman who entered politics at an early age.

The count was naturalized as a Prussian in 1912 and served as a war volunteer in the German Imperial Army during the First World War.

After his mayorship of Amstenrade, he became a member of the Provincial States for the Roman Catholic State Party (RKSP), with which he broke three years later to become a member of the NSB. Count de Marchant et d'Ansembourg served in the Provincial States (1935-37), the Senate (1935-37) and the House of Representatives (1937-1940) for the NSB. He was party leader in the House of Representatives.

During the German occupation, Count de Marchant et d'Ansembourg was appointed Commissioner of the province of Limburg by Seyss-Inquart. The count fled to Germany on Mad Tuesday and was expelled from the NSB for that reason. Count de Marchant et d'Ansembourg was arrested on 30 April 1945 by Shock troops of the Commando-Limburg/Regiment Limburg.

After the war, Count de Marchant et d'Ansembourg was prosecuted by a special public prosecutor. On 29 April 1946, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison and deprived of his right to vote. He was allowed to serve his sentence in his castle in Amstenrade. Count de Marchant et d'Ansembourg was released in 1954.

A judicial expropriation procedure had also been started against Graag de Marchant et d'Ansembourg. On 14 April 1980 (3 years after his death) the expropriation was pronounced by a verdict.
