Biography

Marinus "Rinus" Veth from Papendrecht was employed at the distribution office in Alblasserdam and passed on food coupons to the resistance from there. After being betrayed, he had to go into hiding from 28 March 1944 and was completely absorbed into the resistance. However, it is known that he had been involved in other resistance activities before that. In his book "LIberator Down", American pilot James Keefe, who had landed in Papendrecht by parachute, describes that on the night of 8 March 1944, Marinus Veth, together with another resistance fighter, rowed him across the river to Dordrecht and delivered him to his hiding place.

In the summer, he was arrested and locked up in the bunker of Camp Vught on 9 August 1944. From there, the Polizeistangericht in Den Bosch sentenced him to death for, among other things, several robberies and being in possession of a weapon. However, the sentence was not carried out and he was possibly pardoned at the intercession of NSB mayor Van Rees.

On 6 September 1944, Camp Vught was evacuated and Rinus Veth ended up in Camp Sachenhausen and from there eventually in Kaufering (sub-camp of Dachau) where he succumbed around 30-4-1945.
