During a daylong patrol, he was wounded and fell into enemy hands while trying to pick up a seriously wounded comrade under heavy fire. Died in the area of Thorn, September 27, 1944, of wounds. The patrol, conducted from Thorn towards the Wessem-Nederweert Canal, was ambushed while reconnoitring enemy positions. After his capture, Joseph VAN CALK died of his wounds and was buried at the Amersfoort cemetery. In 1962 he was transferred and buried in front of the monument for the Belgian Field of Honor in Willemstad, North Brabant. On November 26, 2015 he was reburied at the Maastricht cemetery
