Biography

Dirk Hoogendam was born on May 18th, 1922 at Vlaardinger-Ambacht as the son to Leendert Hoogendam and Hendrica Hoogendam-Pater. During the Second World War he was an officer with the SS and member of the Landstorm. He took part in the torture of Jews and people who were thought to have been members of the resistance, where he mostly operated in Drenthe in which a public school at Hollandscheveld werved as centre for questioning and torture.
After the war, the court at Assen sentenced him to death at June 22nd, 1950 for war crimes and participating in foreign military service, a sentence which was later changed to life imprisonment. Dirk Hoogendam however managed to escape in 1946 to Germany and liver there secretly as Dieter Hohendamm. He died in 2003.
