First Mate SS Mendanau

Ebbenhout was first mate on the SS Mendanau when a fire was discovered in the freezing and cooling room in Singapore on July 17, 1940. The crew tried to extinguish the fire, but the second mate lost consciousness due to inhalation of the released gases. In his attempts to save the second mate, Ebbenhout himself became suffocated and died on July 18, 1940 in a hospital in Singapore from carbon dioxide poisoning.
Ebony was buried at the Bidadari Christian Cemetery in Singapore, but the grave was later cleared.
