Groustra was posted on board the destroyer Hr.Ms. Evertsen. This ship was ordered to escort the cruiser USS Houston and cruiser HMAS Perth through the Sunda Strait. Before Hr.Ms. Evertsen, however, was able to unite with both cruisers, she was intercepted by a Japanese superior force. After brave resistance, the ship, after being a complete wreck, had to be grounded in the Sunda Strait on March 1, 1942. Part of the crew, including Groustra, left the wreck in a canoe, but nothing has been heard from them since.
