First mate ss Stad Amsterdam
Seaman's grave
The City of Amsterdam was left from a convoy due to boiler damage.
While sailing in the Caribbean Sea, it was discovered on August 25, 1942 that water was flowing into the ship through a large hole in the aft hold. This hole was probably made by an unexploded torpedo. While they were busy repairing the damage as best as possible, the ship was hit by a second torpedo, after which it sank very quickly. First mate Van der Houwen and two other people lost their lives.
