The Breedijk left Cape Town via Freetown for England on September 5, 1942 and was torpedoed on September 14. Initially it seemed that the Breedijk would float. However, this turned out not to be the case, and the boats were launched. Captain Ruijgrok wanted to take some ship's papers with him and went to his cabin. While he was there the ship suddenly sank.
