Sailing from Calcutta via Cape Town to England, the Bintang was torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean east of Trinidad on November 21, 1942. The ship sank so quickly that the boats were swept away while it was being launched. Captain Rigter and 22 others lost their lives as a result. The other passengers managed to save themselves with two rafts that had remained afloat.
