The Sawahloento, sailing on the Beira-Durban route, was torpedoed by the U 177 on 14 December 1942 170 miles SE of Durban.
The weather was bad and many people on board fell into the water. Due to the high swell and the falling darkness, the boats could not pick up all the drowning people. The captain, first mate Lap, second mate Kesseler and 50 others died in this disaster.
