The Kota Tjandi, sailing in convoy from Takoradi to Freetown (West Coast of Africa), was torpedoed by U-515 on April 30, 1943, 130 miles SE of Freetown. Third mate Aarts was knocked out of the lifeboat by a high wave and drowned along with five sailors.
