Staal was posted to the Naval Guard Department in Surabaya when he was taken prisoner of war by the Japanese occupiers in 1942. He was employed on the Burma Railway and died on May 8, 1943 in the prisoner of war camp in Hindato (Thailand). He was buried at the war cemetery in Kanchanaburi.
