Biography

Lieutenant Commander of the 2nd Class Royal Navy

Taken prisoner of war by the Japanese, Nauta and many others were transported from Java to Sumatra on an old Japanese freighter, ss Junyo Maru, in September 1944. There were 6,500 people on this ship, many of whom were recruited Javanese. The ship was torpedoed near Benkulu on September 18, 1944. There was tremendous panic and thousands drowned in the disaster.
Nauta, who was also among the missing, has made a contribution by putting together rafts while swimming.
