Biography

Student/member of the Resistance

Vedder Christiaanse joined the Resistance against the occupier and was taken from the train in Woerden by the SD on 8 May 1944, in possession of illegal documents. He was first imprisoned in the Amersfoort camp and then transported to the penal camp on the German Wadden island of Wangerooge (Landkreis Friesland). This island, located near Helgoland, was heavily bombed on 25 April 1945, during which Vedder Christiaanse and 48 other Dutch people lost their lives. All these people were forced to work on military works, in violation of international law.
