Bart Gaal was born on January 17th, 1915 as son to Jan Gaal (January 24th, 1887, Steenwijkerwold - January 28th, 1961, de Wijk) and Grietje Schuurer (Fwebruary 1st, 1890, Steenwijkerwold - July 17th, 1991, Steenwijk).
As from the mobilisation until the war in May 1940, Bart Gaal was stationed at Fort Pannerden with the 2e Compagnie, IIIe Bataljon, 43e Regiment Infanterie. From may 12th, 1940 until mid-june he was a German POW with number 32817 in POW camp STALAG II-A, Neubrandenburg. He married with Anna Berendina Bijker (August 5th, 1918 - March 10th, 2014) on May 20th, 1944.
