Bernard Hattink was born on April 11th, 1901 as the son to Johann Heinrich Hattink and Catharina Hattink-Bergervoet. At the age of 16 years he entered service with the Genie (Engineers) end was stationed at the Kromhout Barracks in Utrecht. He was stationed as telegraphist at the Fortress Pannerden, Doornenburg, the Netherlands in 1917 and 1918. He married Anna Maria van de Winkel on July 22nd, 1926.
