Jack Jellicoe James was born on 17th October 1914. He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1939 and joined the TA but, as war was looming, married quickly. He enlisted in REME and was responsible for supplies – Jeeps, Tanks, Radios, Transmitters – based in Bedford and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He trained in Northants and served in the North African Campaign in June 1940. He was then sent to Italy (Naples) and helped in the mopping up of places like Salerno and in the Battle of Monte Cassino. He contracted malaria in Italy. He returned to accountancy in 1945 but was always plagued by malaria.
