George Reid was Squadron Leader in the RAF. He was killed on 28-10-1944 when his Spitfire crashed near the Bogaardsestraat in Maldegem due to technical problems. It was not until 1996, 52 years after it crashed, that the aircraft was recovered and to everyone's surprise, George Reed's remains were found to still be in the wreckage. George Reed is buried at the Canadian War Cemetry in Adegem.

A memorial in his memory has been placed at the roundabout Brugse Straatweg - Koningin Astridlaan in Maldegem.
