Biography

Berend Assies lived with his family on a farm on what is now called the Ds. Germsweg. He was engaged to Luikina Hartholt from De Haar near Marum. When visiting her family during the May strikes of 1943, he was arrested by soldiers led by SD members from the notorious Scholtenhuis in Groningen. His future father-in-law Andries Hartholt and his three sons and others were also arrested. On the same day, May 3, 1943, the group of sixteen men, including a thirteen-year-old boy, were shot without trial in Trimunt near Marum. This event was an unprecedentedly harsh reaction by the occupier to the May strikes and was a great shock to the Eener community.
