Biography

In Groningen, chaplain Böcker quickly became involved in the resistance. He helped distribute ration cards for people in hiding, collected money for the resistance movement and, together with his pastor F.J. Schoenmaker, actually offered shelter to people in hiding.
The Silbertanne Kommando Groningen planned an attack on pastor Schoenmaker in the summer of 1944. The attack was to be carried out by Gerrit Lourens, who, after being wounded on the Eastern Front, was working at the SS headquarters in the Scholtenhuis in Groningen. Just before the attack, Lourens and his companion, a certain Jebbink, distributed pamphlets in the Oosterpark district, which were intended to give the impression that the attack that was yet to be carried out was the work of the Bolsheviks. The men then rang the doorbell at the rectory of the Sint-Franciscus church. The housekeeper opened the door and when asked for Pastor Schoenmaker, she answered truthfully that the pastor, who had been in hiding in Friesland for some time, was not home. The assailants then ordered her to fetch the chaplain. Chaplain Böcker appeared at the door shortly afterwards, after which he was immediately shot dead.
