Biography

Jan lived at Star Numanstraat 2a in Groningen, was married to Emillie Else Busze (nickname Frederieke). He worked as a warehouse manager at an electronics company. He had a strong antipathy towards the Nazis and gave shelter to Jewish people in hiding. Was in the resistance group IV/JH. He was arrested on 31 December 1943 as a reprisal for the liquidation of Elsinga and imprisoned in Vucht. He could no longer cope with the hardships of captivity and committed suicide.

The liquidation of Anne Jannes Elsinga took place after the top of the LO and KP decided shortly after Christmas 1943 that NSB member Elsinga had to be liquidated. Elsinga had discovered who the people behind the illegal newspaper Trouw in Bedum were. The order was carried out by resistance fighter Reint Dijkema on 31 December 1943 on the Eendrachtsbrug in Groningen.
