On the 13.09.1942, during the First Battle of Lake Ladoga, the 121. Infanterie-Division was deployed with the mission of containing and cutting off a Soviet penetration north of Mga. On the 21.09.1942 an assault by the reinforced Infanterie-Regiment 408 commenced. In the first attack the Regiment captured the eastern bank of the Tschernaja and the southern edge of the so-called “Honeypot”. The III./Infanterie-Regiment 408 (led by Hauptmann Meißner) and the subordinated III./Jäger-Regiment 49 won additional ground and reached the high voltage power line NW of Gaitolowo. On the 23.09.1942 the bunker positions on the commanding height in the NW part of Gaitolowo were stormed.
Throughout all of this time Hauptmann Meißner and his troops had a significant role to play, and in recognition of his achievements here Meißner would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
