On the 21.09.1942 an assault by the reinforced Infanterie-Regiment 408 commenced. In the first attack the Regiment captured the eastern bank of the Tschernaja and the southern edge of the so-called “Honeypot”. The III./Infanterie-Regiment 408 (led by Hauptmann Meißner) and the subordinated III./Jäger-Regiment 49 won additional ground and reached the high voltage power line NW of Gaitolowo. Throughout all of this time Hauptmann Meißner and his troops had a significant role to play, and in recognition of his achievements here Meißner would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
