Biography

Jakob Bruggema (resistance names: Jaap, Laanstra, Nieuwland and possibly Arnout) is commander of District VII of the Order Service (OD), member of the Veenkoloniën group of the National Organisation for Assistance to People in Hiding (LO) and associated with the illegal newspapers Doorgeven and Trouw. Bruggema is also involved in the distribution of Vrij Nederland. The OD was founded fairly quickly after the capitulation at the instigation of officer Johan Hendrik Westerveld (1880-1942) and its aim was to maintain law and order during the liberation of the Netherlands because within the circles of the OD the idea prevailed that a vacuum of authority would arise. However, when liberation failed to materialise, a large number of the members started resistance activities in their own region. Bruggema travels the country to accommodate Jewish children and people in hiding everywhere; he provides weapons, ration cards and identity cards. He passes on important information and possible drop zones to the Intelligence Service (I.D.). In PE he works together with Harm Molenkamp.
