Biography

Berend Bueninck was an inspector of the Leiden police in the May days of 1940. In that capacity he was involved in the arrest of dozens of NSB members, who had to be interned by order of the government. In February 1941 he led the police during a massive brawl between NSB members and bystanders on and around the Stationsweg. He was praised for his neutral and resolute action in the Leiden city council. Bueninck, despite the provocations aimed at him personally, never lost his self-control in the face of the agitated NSB members.
As of 1 May 1941 Bueninck was appointed Inspector of Air Protection, with Groningen as his station. Later he became regional police commander there. Far away from Leiden, but he was not forgotten there. His attitude had caused great resentment among the Leiden NSB, who initiated criminal proceedings against him at the court in The Hague. He was accused of threatening certain NSB members with a pistol during their internment at the Leiden police station in the May days of 1940. The Hague court found the accusation unproven and acquitted him.
In Groningen, Bueninck was part of the illegal organizations the Ordedienst and the espionage group Packard. He lived in hiding for some time. Shortly after the liberation of Groningen, on April 19, 1945, he ended his life. His experiences had affected him too much.
