Biography

Born in Joure as son of GP Piet.Jan Sluyter on 04-11-1908 in Midstraat where AH shop is now located. Later, a new practice was opened in Westermeer. In 1930, Nicolaas went to Soesterberg and trained as a pilot. In the winter of 1939/40, he was sent out as a pilot to search for a convoy of ships on the IJsselmeer that were stuck in the ice.

On 10 May 1940, he shot down a German Air Force Junker88A as a Fokker D-21 pilot. As an Englander, he ended up in Canada via Curacao and later in England. There he was active with the R.A.F as a Lieutenant Pilot and later as a Reserve Captain Pilot where he taught both Dutch and other pilots the art of flying.

A skilled flight instructor, he gave flying lessons both in Canada and England at over 12 airfields of which RAF Woodvale near Liverpool became a very important one. He initiated the mascot and logo (Polley Grey) for today's 322 Squadron in Leeuwarden which was established in England on 12 June 1943 as Dutch Squadron 322.

After the war, Nicolaas Wilhelm Sluyter received the following final rank: Lieutenant-Colonel Pilot-Waamemer RTD.He concluded his impressive career at KLM as Member Government Flight Examiner Chief lnstructor in 1964.

He received the following awards in and after Il WW: Cross of Merit, the Bronze Lion and the War Remembrance Cross and the House Order of Ethiopia.
