Biography

In June 1942, Sjoerd and a number of friends were arrested. They had torn off leaflets that had been pasted by the Germans on the Vischmarkt. Sjoerd spent six weeks in the Scholtenhuis, then was transported to Camp Amersfoort. From there, Sjoerd went to Camp Vught. The conditions in the camp were extremely poor. The kitchen barely functioned and the drinking water was polluted. Many prisoners were weakened and fell ill, and medical facilities were lacking.
The family regularly received laundry from Sjoerd, which had to be returned clean. Sjoerd hid a note in between, but unfortunately it was not discovered in time. The note turned with the laundry, making it illegible, a painful sensation when it was found. Food parcels were sent to Sjoerd as often as possible, but the family never received any message of receipt.
Sjoerd fell ill and died on 20 February 1943 at 7 a.m., allegedly from pneumonia.
