Biography

Max Fleer and his brother Jan, who was a year and a half older, were raised by their mother, a committed communist. After secondary school, the brothers studied at the Reformed Teacher Training College in Amsterdam.
From the autumn of 1940, the Fleer brothers supplied copy for the illegal communist magazine De Waarheid (The Truth) and produced large quantities of stencils at home. They and their mother distributed the stencils in Amsterdam West.
From 1944 they also distributed the illegal magazine Ons Volk; den vaderlant ghetrouwe. In 1943-1944 the brothers were responsible for the technical apparatus of De Waarheid in the West section. They also delivered ration cards to people in hiding.
In December 1944, the Fleer family left Amsterdam due to the poor food situation and travelled to Slagharen in Overijssel to stay with a relative.
As a result of betrayal, the entire family was arrested as ‘communists’ in January 1945. Fleer and his brother were transferred to the detention centre in Almelo. Here he and his brother were severely abused during interrogations.
On 8 February 1945 Fleer attempted suicide in his cell. He died of his self-inflicted injury the next day.
At the end of January 1948 he and his brother Jan were reburied at the War Cemetery in Bloemendaal.
