During World War II, Johannes was a student in Groningen and active in the resistance under the pseudonym ‘Zwarte Joop’.
On November 3, 1944, he died while attempting to swim across the Waal with documents from the still occupied North to the already liberated South.
In Nieuwe Pekela, a street was named after him in 1948. His name is also mentioned on a resistance monument in the cemetery of the Dutch Reformed Church in Nieuwe Pekela. He is also buried in this cemetery.
