Biography

James Barry Kraft was born on 28 August 1899, in Buffalo, Erie, New York, United States, s his father was Daniel Jacob Kraft, 28, and his mother, Maude Edith Barry, 22. He married Lucille Katherine Robinson on 21 October 1925, in Bexar, Texas, United States.

James Kraft graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, class of 1924 and fought in World War II. In 1945, he became the first director of the Armed Forces Recreation Centre Berchtesgaden. Until 1995, about 5 million US soldiers and their families spent their holidays at the recreation centre. He retired with the rank of colonel.

Although he moved to Budapest in 1948, returned to the United States and later to Vienna, he remained closely associated with Berchtesgaden. He died on 16 February 1967 in Vienna at the age of 67 and was buried in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, Germany. His wife Edith also returned again and again and found her final resting place in the same grave in 1992.
