Biography

Arthur William Buck, born in Bromley-by-Bow, London, on November 30, 1914, was the younger of two children. His father worked as a carman and later as a bus driver.

A commercial traveller before the war, Buck joined the RAF in 1940 but trained as an air gunner in 1942. Buck married Minnie Rosetta England in 1941.

In January 1943, he joined 1654 Conversion Unit. He moved to 49 Squadron in February and flew his first mission on March 12. After two operations, he was assigned to 617 Squadron but completed three more missions with 49 Squadron, including two over Berlin.

Following the failure of his plane to attack the Sorpe Dam, he returned to 49 Squadron, flying 14 more operations. On September 23, 1943, his aircraft was shot down near Offenbach after an attack on Mannheim. Five crew members were buried by a local priest, and two others, including Gilbert Green, were laid to rest separately.

After the war, he and his fallen comrades were reburied in Rheinberg War Cemetery.
