Biography

Daniel Allatson was born on 7 November 1923 in Eastwood, Essex, as Daniel Louis Alberts. Adopted soon after birth by Samuel and Dorothy Allatson, he grew up in Southend.

Trained as an air gunner, he joined 57 Squadron at RAF Scampton in early 1943. Allatson was transferred to 617 Squadron in April. He performed well in the Dams Raid mission.

Afterwards, Allatson flew operations targeting Italian sites, refueling in Algeria. In September 1943, he participated in a disastrous raid on the Dortmund Ems Canal with a 12,000lb bomb. Poor visibility led to missed targets, and his aircraft crashed soon after releasing its payload. Allatson’s turret was blown clear; his body was later found with minimal external injury.

Initially buried in Bramsche, Germany, he and his crewmates were reinterred at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery postwar.
