Leonard George Weller was born on 1 September 1915 in Edmonton, north London. A toolmaker before the war, he joined the RAF in 1940, already married with a young daughter.
After training as a wireless operator/air gunner, he was posted to 106 Squadron in early 1943. He replaced Flt Sgt Eddie Leavesley DFM in Lewis Burpeeās crew on 14 February, flying his first mission to Milan that same evening. Over the next month, Weller participated in ten more operations before transferring to 617 Squadron, having been commissioned and now outranking his skipper.
On 17 May 1943, Weller flew as part of AJ-S for the Dams Raid. The aircraft was shot down at 0200, cutting off messages he was meant to receive minutes later. His body was one of three positively identified and buried at Zuylen Cemetery, Prinsenhage, alongside Lewis Burpee and Gordon Brady. The remaining four crew members shared a communal grave. After the war, all seven were reinterred in Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery.
