Guy Pegler, known as "Johnny" in the RAF, was born on 27 September 1921 in Ringwood, Hampshire. His family later moved to Letchworth, Hertfordshire, where he attended Letchworth Grammar School. He joined the RAF in 1938 as an apprentice at No. 1 Training School, RAF Halton.
Initially serving in ground crew with Fighter Command, he transitioned to flight engineer training in Bomber Command in 1942. After qualifying, he resumed the final stages of Lancaster training at 106 Squadron’s Conversion Flight, formally joining 106 Squadron in October 1942.
On 24 October, Pegler made his operational debut on a mission to Milan. He completed 25+ missions in 106 Squadron and transferred to 617 Squadron for the Dams Raid.
During the raid, AJ-S flew too close to the heavily defended Gilze-Rijen airfield and was shot down in flames. Pegler, along with Bill Long, Tom Jaye, and James Arthur, was buried in a communal grave at Zuylen Cemetery, Prinsenhage. After the war, all seven crew members were reinterred in Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery.
