Harry John Strange, born in Birkenhead on 25 April 1923, moved to London after his parents’ divorce and was adopted by his stepfather, Robert Lynn. Joining the RAF in 1941, he trained as an air gunner in 1942 and was posted to 207 Squadron in November.
Strange participated in 12 operations before his transfer to 617 Squadron. He typically served as mid-upper gunner but occasionally swapped positions.
On 17 May 1943, Strange flew as AJ-C’s front gunner during the Dams Raid, a role that proved fatal when the aircraft was shot down near Hamm. He and five crewmates were first buried in Hamm before being reinterred in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery after the war.
