Biography

Thomas Barr Johnston, born in Bellshill, Lanarkshire on 19 July 1921, was the youngest of three children. His father taught music at Bellshill Academy, where Johnston studied before working in a local steelworks laboratory.

Eager to fly, he volunteered for the RAF at the outbreak of war, training in Canada before returning in 1942. Posted to 207 Squadron in July, he flew his first mission as bomb aimer on 21 July. He completed around 14 missions by March 1943, when he transferred to 617 Squadron.

Johnson was killed when his crew during the Dams Raid on 17 May 1943.

Originally buried by the Germans in Hamm, he and his fallen comrades were later reinterred in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.
