Arthur Neville Whitaker was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, on 8 September 1909. After studying accountancy and qualifying as a chartered accountant, he worked for a musical instrument dealer in Blackpool.

Whitaker flew nine missions with Vine, including a mine-laying operation and the bombing of Lorient, before the crew was posted to 617 Squadron on 28 March 1943.

Whitaker died when AJ-K was hit by flak over Texel island. His body was never recovered, and he is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
