Arthur Neville Whitaker was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, on 8 September 1909. After studying accountancy and qualifying as a chartered accountant, he worked for a musical instrument dealer in Blackpool.
Shortly before his 30th birthday, he enlisted in the army, later transferring to the RAF in May 1941. He trained as a bomb aimer at Air Observers School and was posted to 467 Squadron in November 1942
Whitaker flew nine missions with Vine, including a mine-laying operation and the bombing of Lorient, before the crew was posted to 617 Squadron on 28 March 1943.
Whitaker died when AJ-K was hit by flak over Texel island. His body was never recovered, and he is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
