Biography

John Wilkinson was born on 2 May 1922 in Antrobus, Cheshire. His father was a farmer, and his mother passed away when he was just a year old. He attended Antrobus School, leaving at 14 to work on the family farm.

He joined the RAF at 18, qualifying as a wireless operator/air gunner in the summer of 1942. Posted to 29 OTU in September and completed training at 1654 Conversion Unit in December. In February 1943, he were assigned to 467 Squadron.

After three operations, Wilkinson transferred to 617 Squadron on 24 March. He spent his 21st birthday at home with his Canadian crewmates, Vernon Byers and James McDowell.

Two weeks later, on 16 May 1943, Wilkinson was aboard AJ-K when it was hit by flak over Texel island. His body was never recovered, and he is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial alongside five of his colleagues
