Biography

David Taylor Horsfall was born in Bramley, Yorkshire on 16 April 1920. He was the older of the two sons of Robinson and Emma Horsfall. The family later moved to Barnsley, where both David and his brother Albert attended Barnsley Grammar School.

In 1936, at the age of 16, David joined the RAF as a boy entrant at the No 1 School of Technical Training at RAF Halton. He initially served in ground crew roles until 1942. In late 1942, David seized the opportunity to retrain as a flight engineer on heavy bombers at the 1660 Conversion Unit at RAF Swinderby.

Horsfall was transferred to 617 Squadron in preparations of the Dams Raid. On May 16, 1943 at 9:47 PM, the Avro Lancaster III ED887 of the 617 Squadron took off in Lincolnshire to take part in the attack on the Möhne Dam. At 2:58 am the Lancaster was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire and crashed in the surf near Castricum.

The entire crew died.
