"On the 17th, 18th and 19th September 1944 at Arnhem Sergeant Barrett took over the duties of Platoon Commander after the officer had been wounded. Throughout the three days his leadership and high example were outstanding. On the 19th at dawn he was ordered to attack with his platoon with the object of securing some high ground. The high ground was occupied by half-tracks, two infantry guns, and infantry. There was also infantry in some houses nearby. Despite withering fire Sergeant Barrett personally led his men up the bank and directed the fire of Gammon Bombs against the half tracks. He caused them to withdraw across the street. The half tracks again attacked but he held firm although casualties were very heavy. The two infantry guns were silenced, and pushed down the hill, the crews being killed. At this point four Tiger Tanks came up and Sergeant Barrett was ordered to force his way into one of the occupied houses - he did this but was reduced to three men only. If it had not been for his tenacious hold on the high ground for about an hour, the enemy could have annihilated the remainder of the battalion in the low ground. His courageous action enabled the remnants of the battalion to get forward."
