The following press excerpt describes why Bramesfeld was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Kapitän zur See Heinrich Bramesfeld, born on the 24.06.1899 in Gemen (Westphalia) as the son of a minister, has outstandingly distinguished himself as the commander of a Sicherungs-Division. Under his leadership a total of 658000 GRT of shipping was escorted, 34 enemy motor torpedo boats sunk, 39 aircraft shot down and 611 mines swept. The award of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Kapitän zur See Bramesfeld likewise is a great honour for his soldiers at the same time. They had had to endure particularly difficult conditions during the naval war in the west.”
