The following press article (dated 14.10.1941) describes why Leutnant zur See Porath received the Knight’s Cross…
“A Knight’s Cross for a bold Seeoffizier in recognition of escorting 41 convoys through the English Channel:
At the suggestion of the Supreme Commander of the Kriegsmarine, Großadmiral Raeder, the Führer and Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht has awarded the Knight’s Cross to Leutnant zur See Porath. He has so far escorted 41 convoys safely through the English Channel as commander of a Vorpostenboot. During the course of multiple enemy torpedo boat and air attacks, he and his crew managed to shoot down 2 aircraft and sink 5 motor torpedo boats. His actions and ruthless devotion to duty have thereby decisively contributed to the smooth operation of the convoy routes in the Channel, and ensured the safety of the vital supplies being carried along it.”
