Timm and his crew took over one of the so called "Monsun Boats", tasked with hunting Allied shipping in the less heavily contested Indian Ocean. By the time they reached the Japanese base at Penang on the 09.09.1944 Timm's U-Boat had sunk 5 allied ships (28018 GRT) and shot down a Catalina flying-boat, all en-route. For this success Timm received the Knight's Cross.
