During the 4. Panzer Division’s capture of Sewsk on the 26.03.1943, the difficult urban combat at the start of the day proved to be the toughest grind. Among one of the German point Züge in this battle was the Zug to which Gefreiter Piechulla belonged. By the afternoon of that day all of the squad leaders and the Zugführer had been killed or wounded, and the success of the attack hung in the balance. In this critical situation Piechulla rallied the rest of his assault team and was able to successfully storm through the Soviet resistance nests up until the time when the day’s objective had been reached. For his bravery and decisiveness during this battle he would be decorated with the Iron Cross First Class and later the Knight’s Cross.
