The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Prochazka received the Knight’s Cross…
“Leutnant Prochazka had already distinguished himself through his outstanding bravery in both the Polish campaign and the heavy combat north of Bouchain. Later, during the crossing over the Oise River at L’Isle Adam, it was again his exemplary boldness, toughness and purposeful leadership in a critical hour that led to an outstanding success being achieved despite heavy enemy resistance. In this time he led his Kompanie over the Oise River in a fearless display of bravado. Although he himself was wounded in the upper arm he continued to push forwards through the strong enemy flanking fire, and after reaching the opposite bank he and his men managed to secure a bridgehead. This successfully held against powerful enemy attempts to crush it until the remainder of the Regiment arrived and expanded the holding. With this defeat the enemy was forced to give up their prepared position along the Oise River.”
