The following newspaper article (dated 15.02.1945) describes why Remlinger received the Knight’s Cross…
“The Knight’s Cross for the Defense of Schneidemühl:
The garrison of Schneidemühl has bested all the attacks from much numerically superior enemy forces that have assailed it from all sides. Strong Bolshevik attacks were bloodily repulsed on a daily basis, and Soviet penetrations were eliminated or sealed off via counterthrusts. The garrison has destroyed 56 enemy tanks as of the 08.02.1945. Here members of alarm and militia units fought valiantly alongside experienced eastern front veterans, and they’ve all managed to hold off the Bolshevik onslaught.
The soul of the resistance here has been its commander, Heinrich Remlinger. In all this time he’s demonstrated an outstanding ability to mold those units available for defense into a firm defensive formation.
The Führer has now awarded him the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross.”
