Awarded for his actions during the fighting around Reval in Operation Barbarossa. During this time Oberst Risse and his reinforced Regiment were able to break the heavy fortified Soviet defensive line along the Pirita river and roll it up towards the north. By this independent decision Oberst Risse was able to gain his Division a new front towards the north and northwest by the evening of the 24.08.1941. From here it was possible to support the assault on the strongly defended high ground east of Reval and thus ensure its eventual fall to the attacking German forces.
