Major Schröder took command of the strongpoint Petrowskoje (13 km north of Artemowsk) on the 21.01.1942. In the days that followed he and his Bataillon (comprising about 400 men) were able to repel multiple armour-supported attacks by the Soviet 96th Rifle Division. In the course of the defense heavy losses were inflicted on the Soviets, including 9 tanks destroyed. By his own initiative he launched decisive counterattacks on the hills to the NE and west of the town with the handful of available reserves, and was able to keep them under friendly control. The efforts of Schröder and his men here were of decisive importance to their parent unit, the 76. Infanterie-Division, which in the course of the fighting on the 09.02.1942 was not only able to halt the attacks of the Soviet 96th & 99th Rifle divisions, but also throw them back to their starting positions. For his contribution to the victory here Schröder would receive the Knight's Cross.
According to Fellgiebel the surname is written as Schröder.
