During the second battle of Lake Ladoga, the Grenadier-Regiment 3 found itself at the centre of Soviet attention as it defended in the sector of the Ssinjawino heights. In the period from 27.01. until the middle of March 1943, the Soviets launched a total of 122 attacks over company strength on the positions of the 21. Infanterie-Division, without achieving any notable success. During these attacks they suffered losses of 120 tanks destroyed and 17 immobilized.

Major Schwender, as commander of Grenadier-Regiment 3, played a major role in the success of the division. He and his Regiment particularly distinguished themselves in the following actions...

1) In the period 27.01.-04.02.1943 , when 81 Soviet tanks were destroyed in the sector of the Regiment.

2) On 22.02.1943, when numerous strong Soviet attacks were defeated.
