In the morning hours of the 09.08.1944 the Soviets succeeding in penetrating the frontline of Grenadier-Regiment 248 in the area west of Wlostow and Ublinek. However, thanks to the efforts of Oberstleutnant Sonntag, the threat posed by this breach was removed. As a result the Soviets were unable to carry out their objective of encircling the forces of the XXXXII. Armee-Korps west of the Vistula. In recognition of this achievement, Sonntag was mentioned in the Wehrmachtbericht of the 11.08.1944 and decorated with the Oakleaves.
